考試形式:candidates take the test in pairs (occasionally threes at busy sessions), with two examiners: the interlocutor (runs the test, speaks to candidates) and the assessor (silent, marks in detail)。
Good morning. Can I have your mark sheets, please? Thank you. I'm Helen Barker, and this is my colleague, Mark Foster. He's just going to listen to us. Now, what's your name, and how do you spell your surname?
My name is Chia-Hao Wu. My surname is Wu — W-U.
Thank you. And what's your name, and how do you spell your first name?
I'm Yi-Ting Hsu. My first name is Yi-Ting — Y-I-T-I-N-G.
Thank you. Chia-Hao, where do you live? Do you live in a house or an apartment?
I live in Banqiao, in New Taipei City. We live in an apartment on the ninth floor, and I really like it, because I can see the river from my bedroom window.
And Yi-Ting, do you come from this city, or somewhere else?
Well, I was born in Hualien, but we moved here when I was seven. So I don't really remember it — um, I mean, I only remember the beach near my grandmother's house.
Chia-Hao, tell me about your family.
Chia-Hao,
There are four people in my family — my parents, my little sister and me. My father works in a bank and my mother is a nurse, so she often works at night. My sister is only eight, and she follows me everywhere.
Yi-Ting, who do you live with?
Yi-Ting,
I live with my parents and my grandmother. My grandmother used to live in Hualien, but now she lives with us, and she cooks dinner for us almost every day.
Chia-Hao, what do you usually do at the weekend?
Chia-Hao,
Usually I play basketball with my friends on Saturday morning. In the afternoon I have to do my homework, which is not so fun. And on Sunday my family often goes out for lunch together.
Yi-Ting, what do you usually do after school?
Yi-Ting,
I go to cram school three days a week, so I get home quite late. On the other days I usually watch videos or draw. I'm learning to draw comics at the moment, but I'm not very good yet.
Chia-Hao, do you prefer spending free time alone or with friends? Why?
Definitely with friends. When I'm alone I just look at my phone and the time disappears. But with friends we actually do things, like playing ball or riding our bikes, so at the end of the day I feel the day was worth it.
And Yi-Ting, tell me about a hobby you would like to try.
Hmm, let me think. I'd like to try surfing, because my cousin does it in Yilan and the photos look amazing. I might be scared of the big waves, though. Maybe I'll try it next summer if my parents say yes.
Now, I'd like each of you to talk on your own about something. I'm going to give each of you a photograph and I'd like you to talk about it. Chia-Hao, here is your photograph. It shows friends spending free time outdoors. Please tell Yi-Ting what you can see in the photograph. Yi-Ting, you just listen. Chia-Hao, please tell us what you can see in your photograph.
In this photo, I can see three teenagers who are having a picnic in a park. It looks like a warm, sunny afternoon, because the sky is blue and there are only a few white clouds. They're sitting on a checked blanket, and there's a basket with sandwiches and some drinks next to them. The girl on the left is laughing and pointing at something we can't see, and the boy in the middle is pouring a drink into a cup. The other girl is lying back on her elbows and looking really relaxed. In the background there are tall green trees, a family who are walking their dog, and a bicycle leaning against a tree. I think they're close friends, and maybe it's the weekend, because nobody looks like they're in a hurry.
Thank you. Now, Yi-Ting, here is your photograph. It shows a family spending free time outdoors. Please tell Chia-Hao what you can see in the photograph. Chia-Hao, you just listen. Yi-Ting, please tell us what you can see in your photograph.
This photo shows a family who are flying a kite on a beach. There are four people — a father, a mother, a young girl and a teenage boy, I think. The father is holding the string and looking up at the sky, and the little girl next to him is pointing at the kite, because she looks very excited. The kite is quite big and it's shaped like a fish, with red and yellow stripes. In the background, the mother and the older boy are walking along the shore near the waves. They're both wearing shorts and sandals, so it must be a hot day. I can also see some, um, white birds — I don't know the name in English — the ones that always fly near the sea and try to steal your food. It looks like a really nice family day out.
Thank you.
Part 3:
Now, in this part of the test you're going to talk about something together for about two minutes. I'm going to describe a situation to you. Your friend has just moved to a new school and doesn't know anyone yet. Here are some ways he could make new friends. Talk together about the different ways he could make new friends, and decide which two would work best. Here is your picture sheet. You have some time to look at it.
All right? Now, talk together, please.
Shall we start with option A, the after-school club? I think that's a really good way to meet people, because everyone in the club already likes the same thing.
Yes, that's true... but it depends on the club, doesn't it? If he joins the robotics club and he's the only new person, he might just sit there and build things quietly. What do you think?
That's a good point. But in my school the art club is quite small, so people have to talk to each other. I still think A is one of the best ones.
OK, I see what you mean. What about option B, inviting a few classmates to eat lunch together? Lunch is the time when everyone talks anyway.
I'm not sure about that one, to be honest. If you've only been at a school for a week, asking people to have lunch with you feels a bit strange. He might feel embarrassed.
I don't really agree, because in Taiwan we eat lunch in the classroom, so he doesn't have to invite anyone anywhere. He can just turn his chair around and start talking. That's much easier than joining a club.
Oh, that's true. I was thinking about eating in a canteen. OK, so B is easier than I said, but I still think it only works if someone answers him.
Fair enough. Shall we look at option C, playing a team sport at the weekend?
I like that one a lot. When you play basketball with someone, you don't need to think of things to say — the game does it for you. And you see the same people every week.
That's a good way to put it. But what if he isn't good at sports? Some people really hate it, and then he'd feel worse than before.
That's possible. But he doesn't have to be good, he just has to join in. My cousin was terrible at volleyball and he still made a lot of friends in the team.
OK, you've convinced me. C is a strong one.
What do you think about option D, the study group for a difficult subject? Do you like that idea?
Not so much, I'm afraid. A study group is really about maths or English, not about people. Everybody is quiet and stressed, so you don't get to know anyone.
I agree with you there. Although if he helps someone with a subject they find hard, they might remember him and talk to him later.
Maybe, but that's quite slow. What about option E, using the school app to find students with the same hobbies?
Honestly, I don't think that's the best one. It's easy to send a message, but it's much harder to say hello in real life afterwards. He could talk to someone online for a month and still eat lunch alone.
Hmm, I see it a bit differently. For a shy person, the app is a safe way to start. He can find someone who plays the same game, and then meeting that person is not so scary.
That's a good point, actually. Maybe E is useful at the beginning, but it isn't enough on its own.
Yes, I'd agree with that. And the last one, F, helping at a school event like sports day?
I think that one is better than people expect. When you're carrying boxes or handing out water, you're working with other students, so you have to talk to them.
That's true, but sports day only happens once a year. He needs something he can do every week, doesn't he?
You're right. OK, so shall we choose A, the club, and C, the sports team?
I'd like to change one of them, if that's OK. I still think B, having lunch together, is the most useful, because it happens every single day. Could we choose B and C?
Hmm, wait. The problem with B is that it's only inside his own class. With a club he meets students from other years too.
That's a fair point. But he has to start somewhere, and lunch is free — I mean, it doesn't take any extra time after school.
OK, you know, I think you're right about the time. Let's say B and C, then — lunch every day, and the sports team at the weekend.
Great, so we agree: B and C. Those two would work best for him.
Yes, B and C. That's our decision.
Thank you.
Part 4:
Now, I'd like to ask you some questions about making friends. Do you think it's easy or difficult to make new friends? Why? Yi-Ting?
Yi-Ting?
I think it depends on the person. For me it's quite difficult, because I'm shy and I never know how to start. But my brother can talk to anyone in about five minutes, so for him it's easy.
I'd say it's easier when you're younger. In elementary school you just play together and then you're friends. Now everyone already has their own group, so it's harder to get in.
What makes someone a good friend, in your opinion? Chia-Hao?
Chia-Hao?
For me, a good friend is someone who tells you the truth. If I'm wrong about something, I want my friend to say it, not just agree with me. And of course they should keep your secrets.
I agree about the secrets. I'd also say a good friend remembers small things — like if you have a test, they send you a message to say good luck. That's not difficult, but not many people do it.
Do you think social media makes it easier to make friends? Why or why not?
Yes, in some ways. I've met people online who like the same comics as me, and we talk almost every day, even though we've never met in real life. Without the internet I would never find them.
That's true, but I don't really think those are real friends. If you're sad, a person on the internet can send you a message, but they can't sit next to you.
That's fair. Maybe they're a different kind of friend, not a better or worse one.
Do you prefer having a few close friends, or many friends? Why? Chia-Hao?
Chia-Hao?
Sorry, could you say that again, please?
Of course. Do you prefer having a few close friends, or a lot of friends?
Ah, thank you. A few close friends, definitely. I have about three friends I really trust, and I'd rather have that than fifty people who only say hello to me in the corridor.
I feel the same way, but I'd add one thing. It's nice to know a lot of people, because then you always have someone to talk to in a new class. But close friends are the ones you call when something goes wrong.
Have you ever helped a new student at your school? What did you do?
Yes, last year a girl moved into my class in the middle of the term. I showed her where the music room was, and I asked her to sit with me at lunch. Now she's one of my best friends, so I'm glad I did it.
I haven't, really. There was a new boy in my class, but he was good at basketball, so he joined our game and after that he was just part of the group. Nobody had to do anything special.
Thank you. That is the end of the test.
