Task format
官方免費樣卷:cambridgeenglish.org → B2 First for Schools preparation。
You will hear five short extracts. For questions 19–23, choose from the list (A–H). Use the letters only once. There are three extra letters which you do not need to use.

NarratorYou will hear five teenagers talking about learning to play a musical instrument. For questions one to five, choose from the list A to H the statement each speaker makes. Use the letters only once. There are three extra letters which you do not need to use.

ManMy mum signed me up for cello lessons when I was seven, and for the first two years I complained every single week — I only went because I wasn't allowed to quit halfway through a school term. Something changed around the time I turned eleven, though. I can't really explain it, but I started looking forward to lessons instead of dreading them, and now I actually get annoyed if a lesson gets cancelled. Funny how that happens.

Woman 2I play the violin in the youth orchestra, and honestly, most weeks I love it. The problem is timing — we've got a big concert coming up, which means extra rehearsals on top of the usual ones, and it's landed right in the middle of my mock exams. Last night I was so tired I fell asleep with my textbook open and my violin still out of its case. I'm not thinking about quitting or anything, I just wish there were a few more hours in the day right now.

NarratorSpeaker three.
Man 2My dad played the trumpet at university, and I think he's still hoping I'll end up in a brass band one day like he did. He never actually says I have to practise, but somehow he's always just walking past the living room when I've got my trumpet out, and if I skip a day he'll mention it twice before dinner. I don't hate the trumpet, but some days I feel like I'm doing it for him more than for me.

WomanI played the piano for six years and then stopped completely when I started secondary school because I wanted more time for other things. At the time it honestly felt like the right call. But last month a friend was playing something at a party, and I realised I couldn't even remember where middle C was anymore, and it actually upset me more than I expected. I keep telling myself I'll start again next year, but I'm not sure I believe it.

ManI'm not the kind of guitarist who enjoys sitting there running through scales for an hour — that part bores me, if I'm honest, and my technique probably shows it. What I actually live for is getting up on a stage, even just at a small open-mic evening, and feeling the room react to a song. My teacher keeps telling me I'll hit a wall if I don't slow down and work on basics, and she's probably right, but I'd choose one good gig over a month of practice every time.
