Nine Days, One Island
Wei-Ting had wanted to cycle all the way around Taiwan since she was twelve years old. Every summer, she watched groups of cyclists ride past her house in Banqiao, their bags full of camping gear, and she promised herself that one day she would join them. (1) Her cousin Kevin, who had already done the trip twice, offered to plan the route and ride with her.
The first two days were the hardest part of the whole journey. (2) Kevin told her that most people who give up do so in the first three days, before their bodies get used to the long hours of cycling.
By day four, however, something had changed. (3) She began to understand why so many cyclists fall in love with the journey rather than just wanting it to end.
The biggest challenge of the trip turned out to be the weather rather than the hills. (4) They reached that night's guesthouse soaked and freezing, but they could not stop laughing about it.
On the ninth day, Wei-Ting and Kevin rode the final thirty kilometres back into Banqiao. (5) She has already started saving money for a longer trip next summer, and this time she wants to plan the route herself.
The Boy Who Cleaned a Beach
Jack Miller was fifteen years old when he found a young turtle stuck in a plastic bag on his local beach in Queensland. (1) He spent almost an hour carefully cutting the plastic away with a pair of scissors from his backpack.
That evening, Jack could not stop thinking about the turtle. (2) Within a week, six of his classmates had agreed to join him every Saturday morning.
At first, the group could only fill a few rubbish bags each weekend. (3) Local shops started donating gloves and bags, and a nearby café offered free hot chocolate to every volunteer.
The turning point came when a local news reporter heard about the group and filmed a short report. (4) Suddenly, teenagers from three other towns were asking how they could start similar clubs of their own.
Two years later, Jack's small Saturday habit has grown into a network of twenty beach-cleaning clubs along the coast. (5) He says the best part is not the awards or the newspaper articles, but the fact that he has never found another turtle trapped in plastic on his own beach again.
