The Rise of Unmanned Stores

Walk into certain convenience stores in Taipei late at night and you may not see a single employee. So-called “unmanned stores” use cameras, sensors, and mobile payment to let customers shop without a cashier. Supporters argue that such stores solve a growing labor shortage. With Taiwan's population aging and fewer young people willing to work night shifts, many stores struggle to find staff. Unmanned stores can also stay open around the clock at a lower cost.

However, the technology is far from perfect. Early customers complained that the face recognition system failed to identify them in poor light, and some older customers found the self-checkout process confusing. Privacy is another concern: critics question how long stores keep video recordings and who has access to them.

For now, most companies have chosen a hybrid model: staff work during the busy hours of the day, and the store switches to unmanned mode after midnight. Whether fully automated shops will become the norm remains to be seen, but they are likely to play a growing role as labor costs continue to rise.

Green Island Coral Survey — Volunteers Wanted

Bilingual 2030

In 2018, Taiwan's government announced a plan to make the country bilingual in Chinese and English by 2030. The goal is to improve young people's English so that they can compete in the global job market. As part of the plan, more schools now teach subjects such as art, PE, and science partly in English.

Not everyone is convinced. Some teachers worry that students with weaker English will fall behind in subjects they would otherwise understand. Others argue that there are not enough teachers who are qualified to teach both a subject and English at the same time. Supporters reply that the program is still in its early stages and that training for teachers is expanding every year.

What most people agree on is that the real test will be whether students actually use English outside the classroom—something no policy can guarantee.
