In my view, requiring students to do community service is a valuable policy, as long as schools give students real choices. To begin with, service work teaches lessons that textbooks cannot. When I volunteered at a care center for the elderly last summer, I learned how to communicate patiently with people whose needs were very different from mine. In addition, community service helps young people understand problems in their own neighborhoods, such as loneliness among older residents or litter along the river. Of course, some students complain that these hours take time away from their studies. However, if schools allow students to choose projects related to their interests, the experience becomes meaningful rather than a burden. For example, a student who loves science could help at a local nature center. Similarly, a student who enjoys music could perform for patients at a nearby hospital once a month. Overall, I believe that community service, when designed well, prepares students to become responsible members of society.
