NarratorOne. You will hear Leo telling his friend Priya about his new part-time job. How does Leo feel about his new job at the bookshop?

WomanSo how's the new job going, at the bookshop? I remember you weren't that keen on doing it at first.

ManHonestly? I thought it'd be really dull, just sitting there scanning books all day. But it's actually been pretty good — the customers are interesting, and my manager lets me choose which books go in the window display.

WomanThat's cool. And the pay — is it any better than the café?

ManAbout the same, to be honest, so that's not really the reason I like it. It's more that the time goes by really fast.

NarratorTwo. You will hear Mia telling her friend Oscar about her school exchange trip. What does Mia say about the exchange trip?

ManHow was the exchange trip to Japan? Two weeks felt pretty short, didn't it?

WomanIt did go fast, but honestly, two weeks was actually enough — by the end I was ready to come home and see my own family and my dog!

ManDid you get on OK with the homestay family?

WomanYeah, really well actually — I was a bit nervous about that before I left, but they were so friendly and patient with my Japanese. What really got me, though, was how much my listening improved. I couldn't believe how much more I understood by the last few days compared to the first.

ManThat's great.

NarratorThree. You will hear Jack telling his friend Ivy about a new restaurant. What does Jack think of the new noodle restaurant?

WomanDid you try that new noodle place near the station yet?

ManYeah, we went on Friday. The noodles were honestly some of the best I've had — really fresh, and the broth was amazing.

WomanSounds great! Was it expensive?

ManNot really, actually cheaper than I thought it'd be for that area. The only issue was we waited almost forty minutes just to order — they only had two staff working, and the place was packed.

WomanAh, that's annoying.

ManIt was, a bit, but honestly the food made up for it.

NarratorFour. You will hear Grace talking to her brother, Sam, about getting a pet. What does Sam think about getting a dog?

WomanSam, I was thinking — maybe we should ask Mum and Dad about getting a dog. I bet they'd actually say yes if we asked properly.

ManReally? I thought they'd say no straight away, but maybe you're right. Actually, that's not really what worries me.

WomanWhat do you mean?

ManWell, think about it — we're both at school all day, then I've got badminton training three evenings a week, and you've got your art class. Who's going to walk it, or even just be home with it?

WomanHmm, I hadn't thought about that.

ManMaybe we should wait until the summer holidays, at least, before we even ask.

NarratorFive. You will hear Ethan talking to his classmate Zoe about their maths test. How does Ethan feel about the test results?

WomanHow did you do on the maths test? I thought it was really hard.

ManHard? Not really, that's the annoying part. I understood every question — I even finished with ten minutes to check my work.

WomanSo why do you look so upset?

ManBecause when I checked my answers just now, I saw I'd written the wrong number down in question four, and I mixed up plus and minus in question seven. Silly little things, not because I didn't understand the maths.

WomanOh no, that's so frustrating when you know the material.

ManExactly. If I'd been more careful, I'm sure I'd have got full marks.

NarratorSix. You will hear Sophie telling her friend Ryan about a hiking trip. What does Sophie say about the hiking trip?

ManHow was the hike on Saturday? Wasn't it your first time going up that trail?

WomanIt was, yeah, and honestly it was much easier than I'd imagined — we were at the top in under two hours, and I wasn't even that tired.

ManNice! Was the view worth it?

WomanDefinitely — you could see the whole valley, it was beautiful, way better than the photos online. Actually, because it wasn't as tough as I expected, I'm already looking at longer trails for next month. There's one that takes a full day, with a night in a mountain hut.

ManWhoa, that's a big step up.

WomanI know, but I think I'm ready for it now.
