My Semester in New Zealand

Two months ago, I left Taiwan _____(1)_____ the first time to spend a semester at a small school in New Zealand. I had never travelled on my _____(2)_____ before, so I felt extremely nervous at the airport.

My host family, _____(3)_____ live on a sheep farm outside Auckland, made me feel welcome from the moment I arrived. Some of the differences surprised me — for example, lessons start much earlier than they _____(4)_____ in Taiwan, and students call their teachers by first names.

At first, I found the local accent difficult to understand, _____(5)_____ by the end of the month I could follow most conversations easily. I also joined the school's hiking club, _____(6)_____ helped me make new friends quickly.

There were, of course, _____(7)_____ difficult days too, especially when I felt homesick. Looking back, though, I'm very glad I had _____(8)_____ chance to go, and I would recommend the experience to any student thinking of studying overseas.
