先看 12 種動物：英文名稱後面附 KK 音標（符號對照見 KK 音標表），第三欄是 1960 到 2031 年之間屬於這個生肖的年份，每隔 12 年一次，從孩子自己、爸媽到阿公阿嬤都查得到。生肖的英文是一組固定的字：牛是 Ox、雞是 Rooster、鼠是 Rat、羊是 Goat，換成 cow、chicken、mouse、lamb，外國人聽得懂意思，但一聽就知道你不是在講生肖。豬偶爾寫成 Boar（野豬）、兔偶爾寫成 Hare（野兔），看到不用覺得奇怪。
年份要看農曆新年，不是 1 月 1 日：生肖從大年初一才換。2027 年 2 月 6 日之前出生的寶寶還是屬馬，2 月 6 日起才屬羊，所以 1 月和 2 月初出生的人查表時要往前看一格。第二組是每個生肖的 3 個個性形容詞，共 36 個：傳統上說屬鼠的人聰明、屬牛的人勤勞，這些形容詞剛好是孩子描述自己和家人時最常用的字，背生肖的同時把 personality 的單字也學起來。

表上的形容詞是民間說法，不是科學。跟外國朋友聊的時候前面加一句 People say…（大家說……）或用 …are said to be…（據說……），例如 People say Goats are creative.，就能講得輕鬆，又不會像在替別人下結論。
十二生肖英文怎麼說、怎麼唸：zodiac 的重音在第一個音節 ZO
十二生肖的英文是 the Chinese zodiac，「生肖」是 Chinese zodiac sign 或 zodiac animal，「羊年」是 the Year of the Goat。zodiac 唸 [ˈzodɪˌæk]，三個音節 ZO-di-ac：重音在最前面的 ZO，o 是和 go、no 一樣的 [o]，最後的 -ac 唸 [æk]，跟 back 押韻。台灣學生最常把重音放到中間唸成 zo-DI-ac，或是把 o 唸得太短；先把 ZO 唸重、唸長，後面兩個音節輕輕帶過就對了。Chinese [tʃaɪˈniz] 單獨唸重音在 nese；接在 zodiac 前面時重音會移到前面：CHI-nese ZO-di-ac。
2027 年的羊年，英文會看到三種寫法：Year of the Goat（山羊）、Year of the Sheep（綿羊）、Year of the Ram（公綿羊）。原因是中文的「羊」同時包含山羊和綿羊，英文卻一定要選一種。美國的新聞、海報和賀卡最常用 Goat，Sheep 次之，Ram 偶爾出現；三個都算對，孩子寫作業或跟外師聊天用 Goat 最保險。順帶一提，越南的十二生肖沒有兔，第四個是貓（Cat），跟越南朋友聊生肖時會發現這個差別。
12 種動物的發音，有五個台灣學生特別容易出錯：Ox [ɑks] 只有一個音節，x 要唸出 [ks]；Goat [got] 也只有一個音節，不要拆成 go-at；Snake [snek] 結尾的 e 不發音，不要唸成 sne-ke；Dragon [ˈdrægən] 重音在 dra，後面的 gon 很輕；Rooster [ˈrustɚ] 的 oo 是長音 [u]，跟 root 一樣。每個音怎麼發，見 英文發音。下面是講生肖時會用到的其他單字。

本命年和犯太歲是外國朋友最常追問的兩個詞。本命年直接說 my zodiac year（It's my zodiac year.），每 12 年輪到一次；台灣的習俗是本命年穿紅色求好運，英文一句話就講完：In Taiwan, people wear red in their zodiac year for good luck.。犯太歲沒有現成的英文，Tai Sui 是音譯，外國人聽不懂，所以用解釋代替翻譯：According to tradition, this year clashes with my zodiac sign, so it may be a bumpy year.——講的是「傳統上的說法」，不必替它辯護，也不用否定它。生肖配對是 zodiac compatibility：Are a Horse and a Goat compatible? 就是「屬馬和屬羊配嗎？」

跟美國人聊十二生肖：大多數人沒聽過，要從頭介紹你的動物
先有個心理準備：大多數美國人不熟十二生肖。有些人聽過 Year of the Dragon 這個說法，但不知道有哪 12 種動物、怎麼排、為什麼看出生年份。所以跟美國朋友聊生肖，不要預設對方懂，用三句話從頭介紹：There are twelve animals in the Chinese zodiac. Each year has one animal. I was born in the Year of the Goat, so my animal is the Goat.——先講「是什麼」，再講「你是哪一個」，對方才接得上話。
如果講到龍，多加一句解釋：西方故事裡的 dragon 是噴火、守著寶藏、被騎士打敗的怪獸；華人的龍卻是帶來雨水和好運的吉祥動物。說一句 In Chinese culture, the dragon is lucky, not scary.，對方才不會一臉困惑：為什麼大家想生龍寶寶？

大小寫的習慣也講一下：講生肖時美國人常把動物名字大寫（I'm a Dragon.），講真的動物時小寫（We saw a dragon dance.）；Year of the Dragon 三個主要的字都大寫，zodiac 本身小寫，Chinese 一定大寫。這不是硬性規定，但照著寫，讀的人一眼就知道你在講生肖。
十二生肖英文常見問題
十二生肖是 the Chinese zodiac，12 種動物依序是 Rat、Ox、Tiger、Rabbit、Dragon、Snake、Horse、Goat、Monkey、Rooster、Dog、Pig。一個人的「生肖」是 Chinese zodiac sign 或 zodiac animal，「羊年」是 the Year of the Goat。zodiac 唸 [ˈzodɪˌæk]，重音在第一個音節 ZO。
最穩當的說法是 I was born in the Year of the Dragon.；已經在聊生肖時，可以簡短說 I'm a Dragon.；稍正式可以說 My Chinese zodiac sign is the Dragon.。不要說 I belong to dragon：belong to 是「屬於某人或某團體」，英文裡沒有「屬」這個動詞。
三個都有人用。中文的「羊」同時指山羊和綿羊，英文必須選一種：美國媒體和賀卡最常寫 Year of the Goat，其次是 Year of the Sheep，Ram（公綿羊）偶爾出現。2027 年 2 月 6 日農曆新年起是羊年，孩子寫作業用 Goat 最保險。
本命年是 your zodiac year：It's my zodiac year this year.（今年是我的本命年）。犯太歲沒有現成的英文，用一句話解釋：According to tradition, this year clashes with my zodiac sign, so some people wear red for good luck.。Tai Sui 是太歲的音譯，外國人通常不知道，要補一句 the god of the year。
生肖用固定的字：牛是 Ox、雞是 Rooster、鼠是 Rat（不是 mouse）、豬是 Pig（也看得到 Boar）、兔是 Rabbit（偶爾寫 Hare）、羊是 Goat（不是 lamb）。寫成 Year of the Cow 或 Year of the Chicken，外國人聽得懂意思，但一聽就知道不是標準的說法。
生肖是 Chinese zodiac，依出生年份分 12 種動物；星座是 Western zodiac 或 star sign，依出生月份分 12 個星座（牡羊座 Aries、金牛座 Taurus……）。在美國問 What's your sign? 對方會回答星座，所以問生肖一定要說 Chinese zodiac sign。
生肖查得到，孩子說得出 I'm a Goat 嗎？
