颱風英文怎麼說、怎麼唸（颶風 hurricane 差在哪）：typhoon 重音在後，不是「太風」
颱風的英文是 typhoon，唸 [taɪˈfun]，重音在第二個音節：tai-FOON（英文重音怎麼抓）。台灣學生最常犯的錯是照中文「颱風」的節奏唸成「太風」，兩個音節一樣重、第二個音節還縮短；正確唸法是第一個音節輕輕帶過，-phoon 拉長，跟 moon、noon、balloon 押韻。順帶一提，typhoon 這個字的來源眾說紛紜，希臘文、阿拉伯文、粵語的「大風」都有人主張，所以它聽起來像中文不是巧合，但重音位置完全是英文的。
很多人以為 typhoon、hurricane、cyclone 是三種不同的風暴，其實是同一種熱帶氣旋，只是依發生的海域叫不同名字：西北太平洋（台灣、日本、菲律賓）叫 typhoon，大西洋和東北太平洋（美國東岸、墨西哥灣）叫 hurricane，印度洋和南太平洋叫 cyclone。所以跟美國朋友說 A typhoon is coming. 時，可以補一句 It's the same thing as a hurricane.，對方立刻有畫面。統稱的學術名詞是 tropical cyclone（熱帶氣旋）。
颱風的名字也值得講一下。西北太平洋的颱風名由颱風委員會的 14 個成員各提供 10 個，共 140 個名字輪流使用，用完再從頭排，所以沒有「2026 年專屬名單」這回事：今年的颱風從去年停下的那個名字接著往下叫。台灣不是成員，沒有提供名字；中文名是氣象署的音譯，所以跟外國人講颱風要說英文名，而且 Typhoon 放在名字前面：Typhoon Gaemi，不是 Gaemi Typhoon。造成重大災害的名字會被除名（retired），換一個新的補上。

颱風假英文怎麼說？「明天放颱風假嗎」22 句問法和答法
「颱風假」沒有一個對應的英文字。台灣人之間說 typhoon day 就通，英文新聞也這樣寫；跟外國人講，最清楚的是說出發生了什麼事：Work and classes are canceled because of the typhoon.（因為颱風停班停課。）不要說 typhoon holiday：holiday 是節日、假期，帶著慶祝的味道，颱風假是不得已的一天假，用 a day off。
停班停課由各縣市首長決定；全天或上午半天的停班停課在前一天晚上七點到十點之間公布，如果半夜風雨突然變強，最晚早上四點半前會補發布；下午半天則在當天上午十點半前宣布。所以 They'll announce it by ten tonight. 是颱風前夜全台灣最常說的一句話。幾點幾分的英文說法見 時間英文。

輕颱、中颱、強颱英文怎麼說？台灣分級、美國 1 到 5 級與 30 個天氣單字
台灣的颱風分三級，依近中心最大風速（十分鐘平均）劃分：輕度颱風 mild typhoon（每秒 17.2 到 32.6 公尺）、中度颱風 moderate typhoon（32.7 到 50.9）、強烈颱風 severe typhoon（51.0 以上）；還沒到 17.2 的叫熱帶性低氣壓 tropical depression。英文新聞直接寫 a moderate typhoon、a severe typhoon，沒有「中颱」「強颱」這種縮短的說法。
美國用的是 Saffir-Simpson 1 到 5 級（Category 1 到 Category 5），看的是一分鐘平均風速，Category 3 以上叫 major hurricane。兩套標準的平均時間不同，不能直接換算，但大致上台灣的強颱已經相當於美國的三級以上颶風。對美國人說 It's a severe typhoon. 對方可能沒概念，換成 It's like a Category 3 or 4 hurricane. 就懂了。

颱風過後回到學校，外師最可能問的就是 How was the typhoon? 或 What did you do on the typhoon day?。下面 8 句是給國小孩子的範本，全部用過去式，因為颱風已經過去了；第三欄標出每句的文法重點，家長可以對著檢查。

練法跟其他節日一樣：不要整段背，家長用中文問「颱風那天你做了什麼？」，孩子用英文答一句；八句都答得出來，再讓孩子自己連著說。程度好的孩子可以在第五句加細節：We ate instant noodles with eggs and played Uno with my sister.。

美國老師的提醒：貼膠帶、雪假，和颱風天最常見的 13 句中式英文
先講窗戶貼膠帶這件事。在台灣，颱風前在玻璃上貼一個大 X 幾乎是全民動作；但在美國，防災單位多年來一直建議不要用膠帶貼窗戶防颶風：他們的說法是膠帶擋不住強風吹來的雜物，玻璃照樣會破，而且可能碎成更大片的玻璃。美國颶風區的做法是釘上夾板（board up the windows）或裝防颶風百葉（hurricane shutters）。所以跟美國朋友聊到貼膠帶，對方多半會一臉困惑，這正是個好聊的文化差異：I know it probably doesn't work, but everyone in Taiwan does it.
第二件事是「颱風假」在美國人心中的對應物。美國沒有 typhoon day，但有 snow day：大雪的早上，學區宣布停課，孩子在家歡呼，家長手忙腳亂，跟台灣颱風假前一晚全家盯著新聞等公布，是一模一樣的心情。所以解釋颱風假，一句 It's like a snow day. 勝過十句說明。另外，美國人聽到 typhoon 不一定馬上聯想到 hurricane，補一句 Same thing, different ocean. 就通了。

最後一個只有在台灣住過才知道的細節：颱風天台灣的便利商店多半照常開門；美國颶風來時商店多半提早關門，沿海地區還可能收到撤離命令（an evacuation order）。所以外師問 Were the stores open? 時，孩子可以理直氣壯地回答 Yes, the 7-Eleven was open the whole time!
颱風英文常見問題
颱風是 typhoon，唸 [taɪˈfun]，重音在第二個音節 tai-FOON，-phoon 拉長、跟 moon 押韻；不要照中文節奏唸成「太風」。複數 typhoons。颱風來了說 A typhoon is coming.，颱風登陸說 The typhoon made landfall.
英文沒有一個現成的字。台灣人和英文新聞說 typhoon day；對外國人最清楚的是講出發生的事：We have the day off because of the typhoon. 或 Work and classes are canceled because of the typhoon.。不要說 typhoon holiday，holiday 帶有節日、度假的意思。對美國人可以說 It's like a snow day.
最常用的是 Work and classes are canceled.；正式公告寫 Work and classes are suspended. 或 Offices and schools are closed.。「照常上班上課」是 Work and classes go on as usual.，口語說 It's business as usual.。只停下午說 Only the afternoon is canceled.
同一種熱帶氣旋，只是依海域不同叫法：西北太平洋（台灣、日本、菲律賓）叫 typhoon，大西洋和東北太平洋（美國）叫 hurricane，印度洋和南太平洋叫 cyclone。跟美國人說颱風時補一句 It's the same thing as a hurricane. 對方就懂。
輕度颱風 mild typhoon、中度颱風 moderate typhoon、強烈颱風 severe typhoon，台灣依近中心最大風速分三級。美國用 Category 1 到 5，三級以上叫 major hurricane；兩套標準不能直接換算，但台灣的強颱大致相當於美國的三級以上颶風。
海上颱風警報是 sea warning，陸上颱風警報是 land warning；發布用 issue、解除用 lift：The CWA issued a land warning. / The land warning was lifted.。CWA 是中央氣象署 Central Weather Administration 的縮寫，2023 年以前叫 Central Weather Bureau（CWB）。
